Ruellia tuberosa L.

Synonym: Cryphiacanthus barbadensis Nees

 

Vernacular name: Bluebell, Feverroot

 

Habit: Herb

 

Habitat: Cultivated, also runs wild

 

Distribution: Tropical America, Malaysia, India

 

Flowering and Fruiting: Throughout the year

 

Key identification features: It grows as an herb. Leaves elliptic to ovate, opposite; Flowers in few-flowered cymes. The corolla has 5 fused purple or pink petals in 2 sets (2 upper petals and 3 lower petals).  There are 4 stamens fused to the corolla tube.  The fruit is a capsule at maturity.

 

Uses: Used as a diuretic, anti-diabetic, antipyretic, analgesic, antihypertensive, gastroprotective, and to treat gonorrhea.
