Swietenia macrophylla King

Synonym: Swietenia mahagoni var. praecociflora Hemsl. 

Vernacular name: Mahagony

Habit: Tree

Habitat: Grown as avenue tree

Distribution:  Native of West Indies and Central America

Flowering & Fruiting: April-November

Key identification features: The leaves are alternate, shaped like oblong-lanceolate. The flowers have five cream-yellow petals that are obovate and hooded.. Within the flower, there are ten included anthers, which alternate with the lobes. The fruit is oblong, forming capsules.

Uses: Traditionally it used for malaria, hypertension, diabetes and diarrhea, as antipyretic, as bitter tonic and astringent
