Key identification features:
These trees grow up to 30 m in
height, with thick, dark brown bark. Their leaves are paripinnate, alternate.
The leaflets are obliquely ovate or elliptic-lanceolate. The flowers are
bisexual and yellowish-white, arranged in terminal panicles. The fruit is a
dark brown capsule with many seeds, each having broad wings at the base.
Uses:
wood is highly prized for high-grade cabinet work, decorative panelling,
interior joinery such as doors, windows and light flooring, and for carving,
toys and turnery.
