Phaulopsis imbricata (Forssk.) Sweet

 

Family: Acanthaceae

Synonym: Aetheilema imbricatum (Forssk.) R.Br., Ruellia imbricata Forssk.

Habit: Herb

Habitat: Semi-evergreen and deciduous forests, also in plains

Distribution: Tropical Africa, India, Indo-China, West China

Flowering & Fruiting: November-March

Key identification features: Diffuse herbs, branches glandular hairy. Leaves in unequal pairs, elliptic, acuminate at both ends. Axillary spike. Flowers small, scarcely seen above the bracts; corolla white with pink spots; Capsule glabrous; seeds 4, compressed.

Uses: Can be used as a fodder plant and in traditional medicine and young leaves can be eaten as a vegetable.
