Zingiber zerumbet (L.) Roscoe ex Sm.

 Vernacular name: Kattinchi, Kattukolinchi, Narikarimbu

Habit: Shrub

Habitat: Evergreen forests

Distribution: India, Sri Lanka and Malesia

Flowering and Fruiting: July-November

Key identification features: Rhizomatous herbs with leafy stems. Leaves are oblong. The spikes are ovoid or oblong, and the bracts turn blood-red as they mature. White flowers have a creamy white labellum. The capsule contains globose seeds.

Use: The leaves serve as food wraps, and the oils are used in perfumed soaps and pickles.
