Syzygium myrtifolium Walp.

Synonym: Eugenia myrtifolia Roxb. nom. illeg.

Vernacular name: Red Lip

Habit: Tree

Habitat: Ridge forests, usually near the sea behind mangroves anjd also cultivated

Distribution: India, Bangladesh, Jawa, Malaya, Myanmar, Philippines,Thailand

Flowering and Fruiting:

Key identification features: It is a tree with a dense bushy crown, up to 20 m tall. Its opposite, stalked leaves have leaf blades that are elliptic to lanceolate, flowers are cream to white in colour Its spherical to ellipsoid fruits are dark purple or black berries.

Uses: An ethanol extract of the leaves has shown antimutagenic activity.It is often grown as a hedge.
