Key identification features: Deciduous trees reaching up to 10m
grey-brown bark. The leaves are arranged in an alternate spiral pattern and a
broadly ovate lamina. The unisexual flowers are part of an inflorescence called
a syconium. The syconia contain flowers of four kinds, with red tepals. Male
flowers are sessile, each with a single, subsessile stamen. Female flowers are
also sessile, cream-colored with a reddish stylar side, and have a superior,
ovary.
Uses: The figs produced by Ficus
arnottiana are edible and may be consumed fresh or processed into jams,
preserves, or beverages. In some regions, the figs are considered a delicacy
and are used in traditional cuisines.
