Embelia tsjeriam-cottam (Roem. & Schult.) A. DC.

Synonym: Embelia obtusa Alston nom. superfl

Vernacular name: Ammimuriyan, Cheriyannattam, Eeshaal, Vila I

Habit: Shrub

Habitat: Moist deciduous forests, also in the plains

Distribution: India and Myanmar

Flowering and Fruiting: February-March

Key identification features: Deciduous shrubs; young stem densely brown pubescent. Leaves elliptic-obovate. Inflorescence is a raceme. Flowers yellow with a thick callous at base inside; calyx lobes triangular. Fruits subglobose, red tipped by the style.

Uses: Seed is used as a vermifuge, the bark of the root in toothache and decoction of leaves as a gargle in sore-throat and in making a soothing ointment.
