Habit: Small trees
Habitat: often in forests, woodlands, or
along riverbanks. The plant prefers moist, well-drained soils and can tolerate
both partial shade and full sunlight.
Distribution: Peninsular
India; in the Western Ghats- throughout.
Flowering and Fruiting: November-April
Key identification features: It is a moderate-sized evergreen trees
with a compact crown, bark is light-grey, smooth and lenticellate. Leaves are
coriaceous, lanceolate to obovate or elliptic-oblong, glabrous, shining with an
acute apex, bluntly acuminate. Flowers are white, fragrant in cymose fascicles.
Drupe is bluish with thin endocarp.
Uses: The bark is employed for its anti-inflammatory and
antimicrobial properties and may be used to treat skin conditions, wounds, and
gastrointestinal disorders.
