Chassalia curviflora (Wall.) Thwaites

 

Family: Rubiaceae

Synonym:  Uragoga curviflora (Wall.) Kuntze

Vernacular name: Karutha-amalppori, Yamari, Vellakurinji

Habit: Shrub

Habitat: Open areas, forest edges

Distribution:  Indo-Malesia and China

Flowering and Fruiting: March-September.

Key identification features: It is a subshrub with leaves are arranged opposite each other on the stem. The inflorescence is cymose, forming a cluster of several to many flowers.  The flowers are subsessile and exhibit trimorphism.. The corolla is white with shades of pink, red, or orange on the lobes. The infructescence axes become swollen and turn red.

Uses: The plant with the generic name 'Chassalia' is the widely accepted name, however some taxonomists have used 'Chasalia', as a spelling variant.
