Acacia auriculiformis A.Cunn. ex Benth.

Vernacular name: Karuvel, Aakashmani

Habit: Tree

Habitat: Seasonally dry tropical biome.

Distribution: Maluku to New Guinea and N. Australia

Flowering and Fruiting: December-march

Key identification features: An evergreen tree that grows between to 15–30 m tall. The trunk is crooked and the bark vertically fissured. The flowers are small, fragrant, and golden in color. They have five petals and are bisexual. The stamens are numerous. The pods are curved, forming an open coil withshiny black seeds that are broadly ovate to elliptical.

Use: Cultivated for fuelwood and is used in making paper, furniture, and tools, and its tannin content is valuable for animal hide tanning.
