Wrightia tinctoria (Roxb.) R.Br.

 

Family: Apocynaceae

Synonym: Nerium tinctorium Roxb.

Vernacular names: Aiya Palai, Bhanthappaala, Kampippaala, Nilappaala

Habit: Tree

Habitat: Moist and dry deciduous forests, also in the plains

Distribution: Australia, Asia

Flowering and fruiting: March-February

Key identification features: Latex milky white. Leaves simple, opposite, distichous, estipulate; Flower bisexual, white, scented, in terminal cymes appearing along with new leaves;

Uses: The wood is used to make lades to stir ragi. A small piece of the bark is added in the milk for fermentation.
