Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb.

Synonym: Buceras bellirica (Gaertn.) Lyons, Myrobalanus bellirica Gaertn.

Vernacular name: Thanni, Thannikka, Thannymathan, Tusham, Adamarutha

Habit: Tree

Habitat: Semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forests, also in the plains

Distribution: India, Bangladesh, Indo-china, Malay Peninsula, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand

Flowering and Fruiting: December-January

Key identification features: Deciduous trees with leaves simple, opposite or alternate, clustered at the tip of branchlets, estipulate; Flowers bisexual, greenish-yellow, Fruit a drupe obovoid, obscurely 5-ridged, yellowish-brown, honed, not winged, softly tomentose; seed one, ellipsoid.

Uses: Fruits used in tanning. The kernel is chewed with betel nut as substitute for areca nut. The paste of bark used to cure paralysis. Wood preferred for fuel.
