Macaranga peltata (Roxb.) Müll.Arg.

 

Family: Euphorbiaceae

Synonym:  Macaranga flexuosa Wight; Macaranga roxburghii Wall.

Vernacular name: Podini, Thodukanni, Uppila, Uppothy, Vatta, Vattakanni (Malayalam)

Habit: Tree

Habitat: Moist deciduous forests, secondary forests and in plains

Flowering & Fruiting: February-November

Distribution: India including Andaman Islands, Sri Lanka, Myanmar

Key identification features: Dioecious trees, bark surface pale, greyish-brown mottled with white, smooth, lenticellate; brittle. Leaves simple, alternate, stipulate; Flowers unisexual, greenish-yellow; male flowers: in axillary, much branched, dense, tomentose, panicles, concealed in large bracts Fruit a capsule, globose, hairy, glandular, black; seed one, black.

Uses: To treat stomach-ache, dysentery, haemoptysis, cough and fever
