Derris brevipes (Benth.)Baker

Synonym: Derris heyneana var. brevipes Benth.

Vernacular name: Karukody, Nanchuvalli, Pannivalli

Habit: Shrub

Habitat: Evergreen and semi-evergreen forests

Distribution: Western Ghats

Flowering & Fruiting: February-December

Key identification features: Stout climber,branchlets slender, glabrous. Leaves obovate- oblong. Panicles axillary. Flowers long; calyx cupular, stamens monadelphous; ovary densely hairy.

Uses: Traditional physicians in and around Kotagiri village near Udhagamandalam, use a mixture of powdered roots of Cassia occidentalis, Derris brevipes variety coriacea and Justicia simplex to control female fertility.
