Annona squamosa L.

Synonym: Annona asiatica L., Annona forskahlii DC.

Vernacular name: Aathi, Aathachakka, Seethappazham

Habit: Tree

Habitat: Cultivated

Distribution:  India, Central America, West Indies

Flowering and Fruiting:  May-October

Key identification features: Annona species are evergreen trees. Bark dark brown, fissured. Flowers are bisexual, terminal or leaf opposed, solitary or in fascicles, large syncarpous fleshy fruit. Seed with fleshy albumen.

Uses: Leaves have vermicidal properties used to treat cattle.. The ripe fruits are eaten fresh. The leaves have also been employed in tanning and they yield a blue or black dye
