Alstonia scholaris (L.) R.Br.

 

Family: Apocynaceae

Synonym: Alstonia kurzii Hook.f., Echites scholaris L.

Vernacular name: Daivappala, Ezhilampala, Ezhilamppala, Mangalappapala, Yekshippala

Habit: Tree

Habitat: Moist deciduous forests and sacred groves, also in the plains

Distribution: South and South East Asia to Australia

Flowering and Fruiting: October-February

Key identification features: It is a large tree. The bark surface has grey-brown and is irregularly cracked and shallowly fissured with latex milky white. The corolla is salver shaped, creamy yellow. The fruit consists of two linear, narrow, pendulous follicular mericarps. The seeds within the fruit are flat, with both ends being commate.

Uses: It is anthelmintic, anticholeric, antispasmodic, astringent, emmenagogue, febrifuge, tonic and vulnerary, it is used for treating neuralgia and toothache
