Achyranthes aspera L

Habit: Herb

Habitat: Dry deciduous forests and forest plantations, also in the plains

Distribution:  Tropics of the World

Flowering and Fruiting: October-March

Key identification features: A perennial herb with stem covered in fine hairs (tomentose). The leaves are broadly elliptic to obovate, with fine hairs. The spike is covered in stiff hairs (hispid).  Flowers are deflexed (bent downward) and have tepals. The ovary is truncated at the apex, and the achenes (seed-like structures) are ovoid and brown.

Uses: The root is astringent, diuretic and antispasmodic, It is used in the treatment of dropsy, rheumatism, stomach problems, cholera, skin diseases and rabies.
