Mitracarpus hirtus (L.) DC.

Vernacular name: Thaval

Habit: Herb

Habitat: Degraded moist deciduous forests and wastelands

Distribution: Tropical America; now common in South India

Flowering and Fruiting: July-December

Key identification features: Erect pubescent herbs. Leaves ovate or ovate-lanceolate, Flowers white, verticillate in axillary fascicles, 4-merous. Corolla funnel-shaped; Capsule ovoid, dehiscence circumcissile. Seeds 2, minute.

Uses: The dried leaves are said to heal old ulcers rapidly. The plant is an antidote for arrow poison.
