Hiptage benghalensis (L.) Kurz

Vernacular names: Chittilakody, Njarambodal, Pongapoo, Seethambu

Habit: Tree.

Habitat: Evergreen forests

Distribution: Indo-Malesia and China

Flowering and fruiting: January-November

Key identification features: Large woody climbers with woody stems. Their leaves are opposite, elliptic-oblong to lanceolate. The flowers are bisexual, arranged in axillary or terminal racemes, and have white petals with crisped margins. Stamens are unequal in length, and the ovary is three-celled and three-lobed. The fruit is a 3-winged samara.

Uses:Turpinia malabarica has been used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a medicinal plant to treat a variety of ailments including fever, headache, and stomachache.
