Distribution: Widespread in the drier parts of Africa, Arabia and Indo-Malesia
Flowering and Fruiting: June-January
Key identification features: These shrubs have angular stems with ridges and simple leaves. Their flowers are clustered in groups opposite the leaves and have reddish calyx-tubes and yellowish-green petals. Each flower has four stamens with yellow anthers and a yellow disk. The fruits are small, round berries containing smooth black seeds.
Uses: The young shoots are eaten as curries; also used
as medicine in treatment of bone fracture.
