Xylia xylocarpa (Roxb.) W.Theob.

 

Family: Fabaceae

Synonym:  Inga xylocarpa (Roxb.) DC., Mimosa xylocarpa Roxb.

Vernacular name: Irul, Irulpool, Irumullu, Kadamaram, Pangal

Habit: Tree

Habitat: Associated with sal forests, moist deciduous forests, also in the plains

Distribution: India, Myanmar, Malesia, Indo-China, Philippines   

Flowering and Fruiting: February-December

Key identification features: Deciduous trees, bark reddish-brown, mottled with white, rough, exfoliations irregular; Flowers bisexual, sessile, dull yellow, in axillary globose heads; Fruit a pod; seeds 4-10, oblong, compressed, brown, shining.

Uses: The bark contains tannins and is astringent, A decoction is used to rid the body of wormsIt is also used in the treatment of leprosy, vomiting, diarrhoea, gonorrhoea and ulcer.
