Elaeocarpus tuberculatus Roxb.

Synonym: Monocera tuberculata (Roxb.) Wight & Arn.

Vernacular name: Rudraksham, Adraksham, Ammakorum, Kotuvasi, Vellathaanni

Habit: Tree

Habitat: Along banks of streams in evergreen and shola forests

Distribution: Indo-Malesia

Flowering and Fruiting: December-August

Key identification features: Trees with buttressed bole, grey-white mottled bark, and greyish-brown blaze. Leaves are simple, alternate. Bisexual white flowers in axillary racemes; sepals tomentose, petals fimbriate. Fruit is a green, oblong drupe, densely tomentose, with a single, compressed stone.

Uses: Decoction of the bark is used as a remedy for rheumatism, indigestion and biliousness. Stem bark is given for inducing abortion until the third month of pregnancy.
