Vernacular name: Maran, Manji, Muramachi, Indian bow string hemp

Habit: Herb

Habitat: Occasionally found on dry forested slopes, gravelly soil and rock crevices, less in the plains

Distribution: India: Throughout; Sri Lanka

Flowering and Fruiting: July-December

Key identification features: It is a stemless evergreen perennial plant, producing fleshy, erect, rigid leaves arising from a rhizome, with a thorn-like tip. Flower racemes are spike-like. Flowers are borne in clusters of 4. Flower-stalks are jointed.

Uses: Fibre from the leaves used to make ropes for tying brooms and for other agricultural purposes.
