Key identification features: The deciduous tree bark is grey to
greyish-brown, and the branchlets are densely covered in fine hairs. The
flowers are bright orange-red, and grow in densely fascicled racemes at the
terminal or axillary positions. The pod is oblong in shape, with a flat base
that is wing-like and indehiscent.
Uses: Butea gum, or Bengal kino, an
exudate from the tannin-rich vesicles in the bark, is used medicinally
