 Habit: Tree

Habitat: Dry and moist deciduous forests, also in the plains

Distribution: Tropical Africa, Asia and Australia

Flowering and fruiting:  January-March and August-October.

Key identification features: Dioecious trees with a height of up to 15 m. Their leaves are simple, alternate. They feature unisexual flowers in axillary clusters, with male flowers having 5 stamens and female flowers sporting a bifid style. The fruit is a black, globose drupe with a persistent stylar tip.

 Uses: Bark yields fibre. Charcoal prepared from the wood.
