Rauvolfia serpentina (L.) Benth. ex Kurz

Synonym: Ophioxylon album Gaertn., Ophioxylon serpentinum L.

Vernacular name: Amalpori, Chuvannavilpori, Sarpagandhi, Vanduvazha

Habit: Herb

Habitat: Moist deciduous forests, also in the plains

Distribution: Tropical Himalayas, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Malaysia

Flowering and Fruiting: March-May

Key identification features: Subshrubs with thick rootstock. Leaves oblanceolate, acuminate, glabrous; Flowers densely flowered in axillary and terminal cymes; Capsules ovoid, black; Fruiting calyx crimson.

Uses: The alkaloids in the roots effective remedy against hypertension, useful in curing insomnia, psychosis, epilepsy, anorexia ,diseases of nervous system, worms and snake bites.
